Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and sinister influences expanding in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his own means, invading the secret base, attacking the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

The antagonist then settled his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each member has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the group enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter vowed a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a multiple motives, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Questers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
