The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
