Lackluster The Software Giant's Earnings Report Wipe Over $70 Billion Off Market Value, Fueling Artificial Intelligence Hype Anxiety.

The tech firm's underwhelming latest earnings have wiped over $70 billion from the worth of the software and data giant established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, heightening mounting concerns of a hype cycle in AI-related stocks.

Steep Share Price Fall Follows Revenue Miss

Stock in the company plunged by 11.5% overnight after it disclosed a lower-than-expected 14 percent growth in revenues to $16 billion in the most recent quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to increase its AI spending by around $15bn.

The business posted weaker-than-expected quarterly revenues for the period ending in November, with sales at its key cloud computing business expanding at a slower pace than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Investor Jitters Over Spending and Leverage

Shareholders were also disappointed by a slower than expected 68% increase in income from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were unnerved by the firm's elevated projections for spending on artificial intelligence. It now anticipates capital expenditure to leap by 40 percent to $50bn, with the lion's share of the additional spending allocated for building data centres.

This aggressive investment strategy comes amid a ballooning debt pile, with Oracle's corporate debt having increased by twenty-five percent over the last twelve months to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the report was not catastrophic, but it served to reinforce fears around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an unknown timeline for revenue generation," said a senior analyst.

Wider Sector Repercussions and Industry Concerns

Sustained exuberance about the promise of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in market capitalizations in the past year, but there has been a increasing chorus of cautions from policymakers and executives who argue equity prices could correct sharply if investors become let down by the development or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating enterprise solutions for major corporations worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in the cloud sector, analysts point to growing concerns about how reliant companies are growing on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle disclosed that its metric of revenue from customer contracts soared by 440% over the last twelve months. However, analysts were cautious when it was revealed that these contracts were propelled by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are two solid customers, it will not soothe concerns that big tech's AI investments are becoming circular, which leaves it vulnerable to a loss of market faith," observed a research director.

"Overall, strong backlog increase was not enough to placate anxiety about AI and the huge amount of investment spending needed by firms to develop AI infrastructure."

Ripple Effect in AI-Related Stocks

Other technology stocks subsequently fell in extended trading following the Oracle announcement. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price declined by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares fell by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares tumbled by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
